They are sitting above your ceiling. A loft conversion adds a bedroom, a bathroom or the office you have been promising yourself, usually without planning permission, and usually while the family carries on living downstairs.
Head height, stairs and structure are checked first. Then the roof opens, and a house quietly gains a whole floor.
